5 Tips To A Healthier Christmas

We all love the festive season, time off work, a holiday if we’re lucky, catching up with family and friends and sleeping in. There is also the other side to Christmas, getting out of your routine, skipping meals, eating late at night, alcohol (lots and lots of alcohol) and of course all the Christmas food.

The crazy thing about Christmas is that we plan to over-eat and we think this is normal. It’s just what we do. It’s how we celebrate and if we don’t indulge ourselves, we feel like we’ve ‘missed out’.
Of course it’s okay to enjoy food and look forward to a delicious meal on Christmas. The occasional splurge is fine, but not when it lasts for two weeks or two months. The biggest eating issue at this time of the year is simply the ridiculous volumes of food we consume over the many festive days. Don’t misunderstand what I am saying, I don’t mean don’t eat or don’t enjoy your Christmas meals. I am saying don’t use Christmas as an excuse to go over the top. You can still enjoy all the festivities of the season without too much impact on your health and waistline.

To help you through the break, I have come up with a few helpful hints to a healthier Christmas.
  1. Don’t skip meals - It doesn’t matter if you wake up late, still eat your breakfast a later lunch and then a light dinner.
  2. Compromise- If you know you are going to eat out for lunch or dinner, try and eat sensibly for the rest of the day.
  3. Don't sabotage your whole day - Just because you had something naughty to eat, doesn’t mean that you must blow it for the rest of the day.
  4. Keep hydrated - Watch your consumption of alcohol and drink lots of water, at least 2 litres a day.
  5. Avoid going to parties hungry - Eat something light before the party to reduce your chances of snacking on high calorie foods.
  6. More time to move - With all the extra time you have over the holidays, why not go for daily walks?
