Why Do Crunches Hurt My Neck?
Am I Doing Them
Wrong?
This is a common concern, especially for beginners. The
answer is both yes and no. Crunches can strain the neck simply because the
average human head weighs between 5 to 7 kilos. If your neck muscles are weak,
you’ll feel that strain even more. The key to reducing discomfort is improving
your form.
First, make sure you’re not pulling on your head while
doing crunches. Place your fingertips lightly behind your ears rather than on
your neck. This helps support your head without adding unnecessary strain.
Also, focus on a fixed spot on the ceiling during the movement—this will keep
your chin from tucking into your chest, which can worsen the discomfort.
As you continue training, your neck muscles will
strengthen, making it easier to perform crunches without pain. In the meantime,
consider incorporating core exercises that put less strain on your neck, such
as planks, dead bugs, leg raises, and reverse crunches. These alternatives will
help build core strength while giving your neck time to adjust.
