6 Tips To Help Break the Habit of Overeating

Many people fall into the trap of mindless eating, often leading to unwanted weight gain. If you're aiming to live a healthier lifestyle, it's essential to find a balance between eating when you're truly hungry and stopping when you're satisfied—not full or stuffed.

Here are 6 tips to help you take control and break the cycle of overeating:

  1. Eat Slowly
When we’re hungry, it’s natural to eat quickly. But eating too fast doesn’t give your brain enough time to catch up with your stomach. It typically takes 12–20 minutes for your body to register that you’re full. Slow down, chew your food thoroughly, and enjoy the process—your body will thank you.
  2. Practice Awareness
How often do you eat without thinking? Whether it's snacking while watching TV or eating lunch at your desk, distractions can prevent you from recognising when you’ve had enough. Try eating your meals at the table, without screens or multitasking, and pay attention to your hunger cues and how the food makes you feel.
  3. Use Smaller Plates
This simple trick can make a big difference. A small plate filled with food looks more satisfying than a large plate with the same amount. It creates the visual impression of a full meal, helping you feel more content with smaller portions.
  4. Choose Foods That Keep You Full
Opt for meals that are rich in fibre, protein, and low-GI ingredients. These foods are more likely to keep you satisfied longer without excess calories, making it easier to avoid unnecessary snacking.
  5. Watch Out for Boredom Eating
Eating out of boredom is a common habit. Next time you feel tempted to snack, ask yourself if you’re truly hungry. If not, try drinking a glass of water, chewing gum, reading a book, or going for a walk. A small distraction can reset your focus and reduce cravings.
  6. Hydrate First
Drinking a glass or two of water before meals can help you feel fuller and prevent overeating. Aim for 8–12 glasses of water a day—it not only helps with appetite control but supports overall health and weight loss.
